Best Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes
A self-cleaning litter box does one job well: it gets clumps out of sight without daily scooping. It does not end litter chores. You still empty a drawer or tray, refill litter, and deep clean now and then.

The short answer
The Whisker Litter-Robot 4 is the best self-cleaning litter box for most homes: Consumer Reports named it the best of the self-cleaning boxes it tried, and Whisker lists it for cats from 3 to 25 lb and up to four cats. For large cats, pick the Neakasa M1. For a simple box with no app, pick the PetSafe ScoopFree.
Key facts
- The Merck Veterinary Manual and Cornell’s Feline Health Center both advise one more litter box than the number of cats.
- PetSafe’s manual says to leave the ScoopFree unplugged and scoop by hand until a kitten is 6 months old.
- Whisker says its separate backup battery gives the Litter-Robot 4 and 5 lines 24 to 48 hours of power.
- The Merck Veterinary Manual warns that straining in the litter box can be a life-threatening emergency, especially in male cats.
The bigger question is fit. Every automatic box has a weight range, a litter it needs, and an entry some cats will refuse. So we sorted these picks by job, not by a single “best.”
Quick picks
Most homes with one to four cats that want the most proven automatic box
Multi-cat homes that want cameras and per-cat tracking
A lower-cost smart box for small and medium cats on hard floors
Large cats and cats that avoid covered boxes
A simple rake box with no app, for one or two average-size cats
How to choose a self-cleaning litter box
Start with your cat’s weight
Weight sensors decide when it is safe to clean, so the weight range is a safety spec, not fine print. Here is what each maker lists:
| Box | Listed cat weight range | Below the minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot 4 | 3 to 25 lb | Semi-automatic mode until the kitten reaches 3 lb |
| Litter-Robot 5 Pro | 3 to 30 lb | Semi-automatic mode until 3 lb |
| PETKIT PuraMax 2 | 3.3 to 22 lb (user manual) | Not recommended; Kitten Protection Mode turns off auto cleaning |
| Neakasa M1 | 2.2 to about 33 lb | Kitten Mode turns off auto cleaning |
| PetSafe ScoopFree | No weight range found | Manual says leave it unplugged and scoop by hand until 6 months old |
If you have a kitten or a very small adult cat, use the box in its manual or kitten mode until the cat clears the minimum.
Match the litter to the machine
Most drum-style boxes need fast-clumping litter. Whisker, PETKIT and Neakasa all warn against non-clumping, newspaper and wood pellet litters. The PetSafe ScoopFree is the opposite: it works only with its own crystal litter trays. If your cat refuses a litter type, that alone may decide your pick.
Measure the space and the entry
These boxes are big. Consumer Reports found the Litter-Robot 4 (22 by 27 inches) did not fit its testers’ preferred spots. Check entry height too. Neakasa’s 13.86 inch entry is a real step for a stiff older cat.
Decide how much app you want
App models log visits and weights, which can help you spot changes. They also mean Wi-Fi setup and, on camera models, cloud video. If you want none of that, look at the ScoopFree.
Plan your box count
The Merck Veterinary Manual and Cornell’s Feline Health Center both advise one more box than the number of cats. “Supports up to 4 cats” means the machine can keep up, not that four cats should share one box. Our take: keep at least one plain box as a backup in a multi-cat home.
What to know about these picks
No automatic box is risk-free. In 2024, an owner reported that her cat died in a low-cost Litter-Robot look-alike sold on Amazon, and the listing was later removed, according to Adopt a Pet. A veterinarian quoted there said no automatic box is completely safe. We only included brands that publish their sensor systems and weight limits. Avoid no-name copies.
Sensors misfire. BGR’s Litter-Robot 5 Pro reported cat activity with no cat near, about once a week. Cats.com noted owner reports of sensor faults on the PuraMax 2 and early “bin full” alerts on the Neakasa M1. Keep sensors clean and follow the floor rules.
Power outages stop the cleaning. Whisker sells a separate backup battery for the Litter-Robot 4 and 5 lines that it says gives 24 to 48 hours of power. We found no outage guidance for the other picks. Plan to scoop by hand if the power is out.
You lose some health clues. A cat behavior expert quoted by Adopt a Pet said self-cleaning boxes make it harder to monitor a cat’s health. The Merck Veterinary Manual warns that straining in the box can be a life-threatening emergency, especially in male cats. If your box has an app or visit counter, watch for sudden changes in visits or weight, and call your vet if something looks off.
Cameras record your home. Whisker says people in the Litter-Robot 5 Pro’s frame may be recorded, and video goes to its cloud. You can turn the cameras off in the app.

The picks in detail
Cats Research pick
Whisker Litter-Robot 4
Best for most homes with one to four cats
Verdict: The most proven automatic box we found, if the price and size work for you.
What it does well:
- Consumer Reports named it the best of the self-cleaning boxes it tried and called it “set-it-and-forget-it” between litter changes.
- BGR’s reviewer used one for years with few problems and still rates it as more reliable than the newer 5 Pro.
- Whisker lists a 3 to 25 lb weight range, support for up to four cats, and a step included in the box.
- The free Whisker app tracks visits and weight (2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only).
The downsides:
- Large footprint (22 by 27 inches) and it must be plugged in, per Consumer Reports.
- One older cat in Consumer Reports’ testing hesitated and chose a regular box when given the option.
- Grocery bags are too small for the drawer, so you need bigger bags or Whisker liners.
- Cats.com notes the litter bed may feel tight for large cats.
Skip it if: Your cat is over 25 lb, you have no room for a 22 by 27 inch unit, or you use non-clumping or plant-based litter.

Cats Research pick
Whisker Litter-Robot 5 Pro
Best for tracking which cat did what
Verdict: The most feature-rich box here, but it is new, and BGR found enough bugs that we would not choose it over the Litter-Robot 4 for reliability alone.
What it does well:
- Whisker lists a 3 to 30 lb weight range and support for up to five cats.
- Two built-in cameras. Whisker says SmartScale tells cats apart by weight for free, while facial recognition needs a paid Whisker+ plan.
- BGR found it a bit quieter than the Litter-Robot 4.
The downsides:
- BGR’s reviewer hit app crashes during setup, motor errors, false sensor alerts and slow camera loading.
- Without Whisker+, live video is capped at 5 minutes a day and events are kept for 2 days, per Whisker.
- BGR listed a 20 lb maximum; Whisker lists 30 lb. We use Whisker’s figure.
Skip it if: You do not want cameras in your home, you want the least fuss, or you would not use the multi-cat tracking.

Cats Research pick
PETKIT PuraMax 2
Best lower-cost smart box
Best lower-cost smart box for small and medium cats.
Verdict: Good odor control and an always-open entry, but a poor match for big cats or carpet.
What it does well:
- Cats.com’s hands-on reviewer rated odor control highly, citing a sealed, locking drawer, and said the leak-proof liner held up.
- The entrance stays open during cleaning and the drum does not fully rotate, per Cats.com.
- The Chewy listing says it weighs and identifies each registered cat and includes sifters for clay and tofu-style litter.
- The manual says the 7 L bin holds about 15 days of waste for one cat.
The downsides:
- The manual says hard, level floors only. The Cats.com reviewer used it on carpet and had to turn off auto-scoop.
- Cats over 10 lb in the reviewer’s home largely ignored it.
- Deep cleaning was slow; the included magnetic litter remover did not work well.
- We could not confirm what happens during a power outage or with no Wi-Fi.
Skip it if: Your cat is large (PETKIT’s limit is 22 lb, but the reviewer’s cats over 10 lb mostly avoided it), the box must sit on carpet, or you have kittens under 3.3 lb with no plan for kitten mode.

Cats Research pick
Neakasa M1
Best for large cats and cats that dislike hoods
Verdict: The widest weight range and an open top, at the cost of a tall entry and more dust.
What it does well:
- Neakasa lists 2.2 to about 33 lb, the highest limit Cats.com’s reviewer had seen.
- The open-top design lets cats enter from any side, which Cats.com suggests may suit big cats that avoid covered boxes.
- Neakasa lists 6 pairs of infrared sensors and 4 weight sensors. Cats.com notes the globe never fully closes during a cycle.
- Neakasa says the box keeps running on saved settings if the internet drops. The 11.23 L bin lasts about 14 days for one cat.
The downsides:
- The 13.86 inch entry is tall, and Cats.com says the step is sold separately.
- An open top will not keep out dogs or small children.
- Cats.com reported early “bin full” alerts that stop the unit, fast dust buildup, and owner reports of urine leaks at a mat seam.
- The Cats.com reviewer’s own senior cat refused it.
Skip it if: You have a senior or arthritic cat, a dog that raids litter boxes, or toddlers.

Cats Research pick
PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy
Best simple box with no app
Best simple box with no app.
Verdict: Gets waste out of sight with no Wi-Fi, but it does less than the drum boxes, and the trays are an ongoing cost.
What it does well:
- A rake sweeps waste into a covered trap. PetSafe’s manual says it starts 20 minutes after the cat leaves and resets if the cat comes back.
- PetSafe’s page shows a built-in health counter that tallies visits, and it mentions no app.
- PetSafe’s support page gives tray change timing: every 20 to 30 days for one cat, 10 to 15 days for two.
The downsides:
- Crystal litter trays only. Consumer Reports found the crystals can have sharp edges.
- Consumer Reports said the rake handles how it looks more than how it smells, small droppings slipped past it, and the walls were too short for larger cats.
- The disposable cardboard trays create waste and may be too flimsy for cats that dig hard, per Consumer Reports.
- Consumer Reports tested the “ScoopFree Pro.” We could not confirm it is identical to the current Crystal Pro Legacy.
Skip it if: Your cat dislikes crystal litter, you have kittens under 6 months, or your cat is large or sprays high.

Questions people ask
What is the best automatic litter box for multiple cats?
For most multi-cat homes, the Litter-Robot 4 (up to four cats, per Whisker). If you need to tell cats apart and accept the bugs BGR found, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro (up to five). Either way, vet guidance is still one more box than the number of cats.
Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for kittens?
Not in automatic mode until the kitten clears the maker’s minimum weight. Whisker says 3 lb, PETKIT 3.3 lb, Neakasa 2.2 lb. PetSafe’s manual says to keep the ScoopFree unplugged until 6 months old.
What about senior or arthritic cats?
Most automatic boxes have a raised entry, and the Merck Veterinary Manual says arthritic cats may need low sides. For a stiff older cat, a large, low-entry regular box is often the better choice. See the senior box on our cats page.
What are good Litter-Robot alternatives?
The PETKIT PuraMax 2 for smaller cats and hard floors, the Neakasa M1 for big cats, and the PetSafe ScoopFree if you want no app at all.
Will my cat use it?
Many cats need time. In Consumer Reports’ testing, most cats adjusted to the Litter-Robot 4 within a few days, but one older cat did not. Leave the old box out during the switch.
