Pets this page covers
Snakes
Heaters should be thermostat-controlled and shielded, and hot rocks are best avoided. Many states restrict certain snakes, so check the rules where you live. The research behind this page did not verify snake-specific UVB guidance or a snake enclosure with a documented build, so the enclosure listed is a ready-made option only.
Turtles
Give an aquatic turtle the largest enclosure you can, since starter tanks are quickly outgrown. A US federal rule (21 CFR 1240.62) restricts selling live turtles with a shell under 4 inches for commercial or public distribution. We only saw an older edition of the text, so confirm the current rule and check the rules where you live. Skip any 'baby turtle' listing.
Tortoises
A table or floor pen beats a vivarium, with UVB lighting and a diet of mostly weeds, per a UK veterinary school care sheet for Mediterranean species. We did not verify any tortoise table or pen product, so none is listed here. Check the rules where you live, since some tortoises are protected species.
What to look for
- Heaters should be thermostat-controlled, shielded from the animal, and placed at one end of the enclosure so the animal can choose its temperature. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Reptiles
- UVB is essential for most diurnal lizards and chelonians (turtles and tortoises). Tubes should sit within about 12 in of the animal and be replaced every 9 to 12 months, and ordinary glass and most plastics filter out UVB. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Reptiles
- Avoid hot rocks, which often burn larger reptiles. Do not cut ventilation to hold humidity, because that can cause skin and respiratory disease. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Reptiles
- Quarantine new reptiles for 3 to 6 months and give the animal the largest enclosure you can. Glass swings in temperature more than wood, plastic or fibreglass. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Reptiles
- For Mediterranean tortoises, a table or floor pen beats a vivarium. Use sides about 1 ft high, hides at both ends, no wood chip substrate, a diet of more than 70% weeds, a submersible water dish and twice weekly baths. Source: Royal Veterinary College, Mediterranean tortoise care sheet
- Treat every reptile as a Salmonella carrier. Wash hands after handling the animal or touching enclosure items, keep animals and gear out of kitchens, and avoid reptiles for children under 5, people over 65 and the immunocompromised. Source: Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV), Salmonella guide
- Selling or giving away live turtles with a shell under 4 inches for commercial or public distribution is prohibited by US FDA rule 21 CFR 1240.62, with exceptions such as education, export and non-business sale. This link is the 1996 edition of the rule, so confirm the current text and check the rules where you live. Source: US Code of Federal Regulations, 21 CFR 1240.62 (1996 edition)
- Heat sources can burn the animal. Merck advises thermostat control and shielding so the animal cannot touch the heat source. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual, Management of Reptiles

Enclosure Snakes Research pick
New Age Pet ECOFLEX Reptile Enclosure
Snake keepers who want a large, ready-built enclosure. Chewy lists it first in its snake enclosure guide.
A large reptile enclosure sold in sizes from 15 to 120 gallons. It was only seen on Chewy list pages, so material, doors and locks are not verified.
Skip it if: You need a specific humidity build or have not confirmed the material and ventilation. Construction details were not verified.
Price seen: 120 gal $249.99; 15 gal $84.99 (Chewy) | Chewy: 4.2 of 5, 1,531 ratings (list page, count pooled across sizes)

Heating control Snakes, turtles, tortoises Research pick
Zoo Med ReptiTemp Digital Reptile Terrarium Thermostat
Anyone running a heat emitter, heat lamp or heat panel on snakes, tortoises or turtles who wants a controlled gradient. Merck says heaters should be thermostat-controlled and shielded.
A digital thermostat that sits between the wall and the heater and holds a set temperature from a probe. It appears in Chewy's top lists for both snake and turtle heating.
Skip it if: You only use a low-wattage under-tank mat already on a built-in controller.
Price seen: $49.98 (Chewy) | Chewy: 4.7 of 5, 122 ratings (list page)

Heating Snakes, tortoises Research pick
Fluker's Ceramic Reptile Heat Emitter
Snake and tortoise setups that need night-time heat with no light.
A screw-in ceramic heater that gives off heat but no visible light. It needs a ceramic-rated lamp fixture, and the Fluker's ceramic clamp lamp is a common pairing. Burn hazard if the animal can touch it.
Skip it if: You do not have a thermostat and a bulb guard. Skip the 100 W unit for tiny enclosures where it overheats and use the lower wattage.
Price seen: 100 W $21.72 to $25.19; 60 W $14.99 (Chewy) | Chewy: 4.5 of 5, 337 ratings (list page, pooled across wattages)

Substrate Snakes Research pick
Zoo Med Forest Floor Natural Cypress Mulch Reptile Bedding (24 qt)
Snakes and other reptiles that like moisture-holding bedding. Chewy ranks it first in its reptile substrate list.
Shredded cypress bedding that holds moisture and resists mould better than many mulches.
Skip it if: Your species needs a dry, arid substrate, or the animal is prone to eating loose chips with prey. Impaction is a general concern, and the Royal Veterinary College warns wood chips can block tortoises.
Price seen: $24.98 to $32.98 (Chewy, two lists) | Chewy: 4.8 of 5, 467 ratings (list page)

Tetrafauna Aquatic Turtle Deluxe Aquarium Kit (20 gal)
First-time keepers of a small aquatic turtle who want a starter bundle.
A boxed 20 gallon aquarium kit marketed for aquatic turtles. Contents were not opened in detail, so exact inclusions are not verified.
Skip it if: You are keeping a full-size adult slider or similar. A 20 gal tank is a starter size, and Merck recommends the largest enclosure possible, so plan to upgrade.
Price seen: $197.12 and $240.62 on two Chewy lists | Chewy: 4.3 of 5, 99 ratings; a second list showed 4.2 of 5, 77 ratings

Small aquatic turtle tanks up to about 30 gallons.

Tetra ReptoMin Floating Sticks Turtle and Amphibian Food (1.98 lb)
Aquatic turtle staple diet.

UVB lighting Tortoises Research pick
Arcadia Reptile Pro T5 Kit, Desert 12% UVB, 24 W, 24 in
Tortoises and other basking species from open, sunny habitats. Merck says UVB is essential for most diurnal lizards and chelonians.
A fixture plus T5 UVB tube kit rated at 12% UVB for desert species.
Skip it if: Your enclosure is under glass or a screen that blocks UVB, or the lamp cannot be held within about 12 in of the animal. Skip for most snakes, since UVB need is species dependent and snake guidance was not verified.
Price seen: $84.99 (Chewy) | Chewy: 4.4 of 5, 192 ratings (list page)

Mazuri Original 5M21 Tortoise Food (25 lb)
Tortoise keepers wanting a formulated base diet to sit alongside fresh weeds.
A pelleted tortoise diet in a 25 lb bag. Chewy lists it top for tortoise food.
Skip it if: You rely on it as the whole diet. The Royal Veterinary College advises a diet that is more than 70% weeds for Mediterranean tortoises.
