Pets this page covers
Reptiles
Give a temperature gradient, use at least two thermometers, and put heat sources on thermostats. Overheating from heat lamps is common.
Bearded dragons
Bearded dragons are more tolerant of handling and live about 5 to 10 years. A UVB bulb and a large enclosure are the main buys, and both are listed below.
Leopard geckos
Leopard geckos can live 20+ years. We have not verified a leopard gecko specific pick, and the gecko diet below is not formulated for them.
Other geckos
The Pangea fruit-based diet below suits crested geckos and other fruit-eating geckos.
Chameleons
Chameleons are generally hands-off and drink droplets, so misting or drip systems help. We have a tall enclosure pick, but have not verified misting or drip gear yet.
Iguanas
Green iguanas are more tolerant of handling and live about 5 to 15 years. We have not verified picks for iguanas yet.
Monitors and tegus
We have not verified picks for monitors and tegus yet. The Merck page we used had no monitor or tegu guidance, and the 4 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure below is too small for an adult tegu or monitor.
What to look for
- Provide a temperature gradient within the species' preferred range, use at least two thermometers (one at the cool end, one at the warm end), and put heat sources on programmable thermostats. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Fluorescent UVB bulbs (290 to 320 nm) are the most appropriate. Most non-mercury UV bulbs should be within 18 inches of the basking or resting spot. The source gives no replacement schedule. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Basking lights should sit more than 18 inches above the animal. Overheating is common, and temperatures 10 F above the upper limit can be lethal to some species. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Under-tank heat should cover no more than 30% of the floor, and hot rocks are not recommended. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Humidity below 35% can cause dry skin and bad sheds, and above 70% can cause skin infection in some species. Use a hygrometer. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Avoid sand, gravel and corncob substrate (ingestion, blockage and mold) and cedar or pine shavings (oils linked to respiratory and neurologic problems). Disinfect enclosures at least every 3 months. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Bearded dragons and iguanas are more tolerant of handling, and chameleons are generally hands-off. Leopard geckos can live 20+ years, bearded dragons 5 to 10, and green iguanas 5 to 15. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
- Reptiles often carry Salmonella while healthy. Wash hands after handling animals, food, tanks or equipment, keep reptile gear out of kitchens, and pour tank water down the toilet, not a sink. Risk is higher for children under 5, adults 65+, and immunocompromised people. Source: CDC
- An annual health check by a vet is recommended. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual
